If you have time, you might sometime feel like looking up the odds in games such as blackjack, roulette or even the random slot machines in areas such as Las Vegas. These gambling devices are exactly that, gambling devices. Designed to pull users money out of their pockets and into establishment coffers, these games and machines do little more than offer a way for users to experience some fun and excitement while giving their money away. The odds against the user winning any games against the house are so ridiculous as to make it practically impossible to earn any type of living at such games. It is rare that you hear people talk about the proliferation of professional blackjack players, or the influx of professional slot machine players. The reason that there are very few professional slot machine and blackjack players, is that these games feature odds that are so ridiculously against the user, that no player could afford to become a professional or stay a professional for very long without a Rockefeller size bankroll. Although, it is very likely that even a Rockefeller would eventually go broke playing against odds so steep in games of any reasonably high limit.
Standing in stark contrast to the odds against the player involved in games such as roulette, blackjack and the slot machines, the game of poker is based largely on skill and the user’s ability to manipulate the cards and the odds against the players arrayed against them. Since the game of poker is played against other players, rather than the establishment, the odds become far more favorable, including the extremely favorable odds involved in widely publicized poker tournaments, such as the World Series of poker tournament in Las Vegas. Playing in these poker tournaments allows players to compete for all manner of tremendous prizes at odds that are far more favorable than traditional cash poker games. But even in the cash game, the poker player stands a far better chance of winning than in any other type of game of chance.
In roulette, the chance of winning is 1 in 37, as there are 37 slots on the roulette wheel. In poker, the players odds are predicated upon the amount of players in the game. If the player is playing in a tournament against 4000 other players, then it would seem that his odds would be one of 4000. But considering that many tournaments pay out for many of the top spots, the odds are actually not quite as bad as they would first appear.
